February 2011, was the first year which Community College Gippsland delivered The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Foundation, Intermediate and Senior in the Bass Coast region. VCAL in Cowes is delivered to meet the educational needs of rural students, who desire an educational pathway outside the conventional system. Students attended VCAL 4 days per week.

Community College Gippsland also offered the opportunity for the VCAL students to study the Vocational Education and Training (VET) component of the certificate by offering Certificate II in Horticulture (units). The VCAL students were assisted in finding a Structured Workplace Learning Placement in a local business to gain work skills through hands on learning and experience.

Throughout the year, excursions and guest speakers were organised to and from the following organisations to provide variety, and knowledge from particular fields:

Students engaged in a minimum of forty hours Structured Workplace Learning Placement in a local business to gain work skills through hands on learning and experience. Placements included; childcare centre, retail outlets, mechanical workshop, nature park, and carpentry workshop.

ESL is a course designed for people of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds, to assist with their language and assimilation into Australian society whilst making friends. This course can lead to a student receiving a certificate.
The CGEA is a set of accredited courses designed to improve the literacy, numeracy and general education skills of adults aged 15 and over. It provides a range of educational opportunities to assist learners to meet personal learning needs and to increase participation in the community, the workplace, or in further education and training.
VCAL aims to provide students with the skills, knowledge and attitudes to make informed choices about pathways to work and further education.
These indicators are based on surveys of students and employers. The samples represent a percentage of the organisation’s training delivery in the 2010 and 2011 calendar years. The students and employers surveyed for the indicators were selected by this organisation in accordance with the national guidelines.
