» Course Description:
The Gippsland Harness Racing Training Centre is a fully operational racing stable that has been designed as a modern training facility and is equipped with the latest technology used in the Racing Industry.
A racehorse trainer is a person who is licensed to operate a business that trains horses under racing industry regulated licensing criteria for the purpose of competing in industry-regulated events. The trainer is responsible for the care, maintenance and racing performance of the animals. A trainer at this level has developed a sound knowledge of all aspects of the industry and has acquired competencies that enable performance of all tasks and duties associated with running a racing establishment, including managing staff, finances and equipment
To undertake this qualification the candidate will have extensive industry-relevant experience in the care, welfare and management of horses. Before commencing this qualification, candidates must be able to demonstrate that they have the appropriate skills and knowledge commensurate with RGR30208 Certificate III in Racing (Advanced Stablehand). It is suggested students complete the Certificate III qualification before enrolling in Certificate IV in Racing Racehorse Trainer.
This course will run in Semester 2 dependant upon sufficient numbers.

» Course Notes: Students are instructed in a range of topics covering basic and advanced horse handling, nutrition and physiology, basic and advanced training, conditioning, communication skills and racing management. The course aims to give students the hands-on knowledge and the useable skills necessary in advanced training, stable and staff management and the conditioning of horses for racing to provide the basis for a successful career in the harness racing industry.

» Essentials, Prerequisites: Entry requirements: Students need be 15 years of age and a minimum Year 10 or equivalent qualification. Selection of eligible students will be based on interview with an industry panel. Students will need to show elements of motivation, awareness of industry requirements and a passion to work in the industry.
» Pathways:
Graduates may decide to become a harness trainer and train horses for outside owners or themselves or continue on to complete a Diploma in Racing.
» Recognition of Prior Learning, Credit Transfers:
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Students wishing to apply for RPL need to indicate this on the Enrolment Form. RPL Application Forms are available from the Course Co-ordinator.
Credit Transfer: Credit Transfer is the recognition and acknowledgment of modules or units of competency acquired through prior formal credentialed training (identical academic experience).
Community College Gippsland grants Credit Transfer under our Mutual Recognition obligations.
