HAIR AND BEAUTY STUDENTS ON SHOW

November 29, 2011

Some 50 students studying Hair and Beauty courses at Community College Gippsland (CCG) put their creativity to the test recently competing at the Colleges 2011 Hair and Beauty competition at the McMillan campus.

Creations from fantasy to modern and chic were paraded by students studying Certificate to Diplomas level courses at CCG’s Warragul, Traralgon, and Pakenham campuses with students competing in seven categories.

Students were given 60 minutes to prepare their models and then be judged by an industry panel comprising Gaetano Zammit RPR Haircare, Deb Handley of De’Koda Hair and Beauty Lounge, and international makeup artist Layla Stanton.

Judge Gaetano Zammit said the quality of the students work was outstanding and noted the level of imagination and innovation. Judge Layla Stanton also commented on the high standard of make up entries.

Emily Sullivan of Drouin won the Overall Student Award for Beauty while Morwell’s Christopher Ahurir took out the Overall Award for Hairdressing achieving the highest scores of the day.

Other First Prize category award winners in Hairdressing were Warragul’s Danielle Burdett for Catwalk, Traralgon’s Edna Sandford for Ladies Cutting, Pakenham’s Ashley Houston Blowwaving, and Rosedale’s Nicole Barret High Fashion Colour.

Tehmina Tanveer of Traralgon won Beauty Bridal Make Up, Kathy Dunning of Modella Nail Art, and Asta Bennett of Traralgon Fantasy Make up.

Community College Gippsland Coordinator, Leonie Paterson, said the awardees were examples of the calibre of students and the enthusiasm and commitment they have to excellence in the hair and beauty industries.

“The College’s Hair and Beauty Competition is modelled on the criteria of the state-wide International Hair Society (IHS) awards to give students a taste of what is expected in competition at the elite level.

“The show attracted an audience of around 80 guests and provided a great platform for students to hone their skills and publically show their talent, “ she said.

Many of the students are nearing completion of their courses which will enable them to work as fully qualified hairstylists and beauticians in the next few months.

CCG offers Certificate to Diploma level courses for new entrants and qualified hairdressers and beauticians wishing to extend their skills to specialise.
