Representatives from local schools, education providers and teachers turned out to recognise the contribution of West Gippsland’s Barbara and Fred Archer who have retired after 13 years of leading the region’s Casual Relief Teacher (CRT) Agency.
Established by ECG (Education Centre Gippsland) in 1996 in response to requests from local principals, Barbara and Fred have grown the service to some 80 casual relief teachers (CRT’s) servicing primary schools across west Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley.
Speaking at a farewell presentation, former ECG CEO, Russell Brown, said the two were a perfect fit to manage the service because of their business backgrounds in education and training, and excellent people skills.
“Prior to the formation of the CRT Agency, local schools had to phone around and find their own CRT’s which was often a time-consuming task for many principals and senior teachers.
“Fred and Barbara Archer played a large role in building and retaining a pool of excellent casual relief teachers to meet the needs of local primary schools. Their role has been a challenging and demanding one responding to a daily deluge of requests from schools, and organising and matching CRT’s to meet their specific needs at short notice. Their professionalism and efficiency has resulted in a majority of local primary schools utilising the service which continues to flourish.”
Current ECG CEO, Bernadette O’Connor, said the Agency has been a win for casual relief teachers and for local primary schools. Barbara and Fred also assisted in setting up support structures for CRT’s to meet, network and share knowledge and experience.
“The CRT Agency would not have grown to where it is today without the strong commitment of Barb and Fred Archer.”
At the presentation, Ms O’Connor also took the opportunity to introduce new CRT Manager Kath Herbert who will continue the work of Fred and Barbara in running the CRT agency in 2011.
ECG is planning to extend the service to South Gippsland schools in 2011 to meet demand in that region.
