In today’s technology driven world, it is refreshing to find a training centre that takes people outdoors to learn hands-on with horses.
The Gippsland Harness Training Centre at Warragul is a fully operational stable offering Certificate to Diploma level courses for people to work in the harness and thoroughbred industries.
Courses are tailored for new entrants as well as people working in the industry
involved with the care and training of horses, or who ride or drive in races such as stable hands, track work drivers, harness race drivers, and racehorse trainers.
The centre also hosts a large number of VET students undertaking Certificate II Stable hand. This is giving secondary students an opportunity to get a taste of the industry and if they chose to pursue a career with horses they have a qualification to work in the industry straight away. The centre also offers work experience to students.
The centre is currently rolling out training to thoroughbred stables across Victoria with new regulations set to be introduced next year requiring all staff working with horses to have a minimum Stablehand qualification.
Many of the people who have undertaken entry level courses go onto higher certificate or diploma level training because of the confidence they gain and opportunity they have to build their careers through training.
The centre has its own racing team and stable of race horses providing opportunities for students to gain real experience on the professional racing circuit
Last year the centre’s racing horse, Get On Board was awarded Warragul Horse of the Year by the Warragul Harness Racing Club for recording the highest number of points over all horses competing at Warragul during 2009.
The centre is also open to all horse owners with short courses to help people with horse care covering nutrition, dentistry and more.
ECG staff and students of the Gippsland Harness Training Centre celebrate Warragul Horse of the Year ‘Get on Board.’
